WEBThe International Court of Justice (ICJ) is the principal judicial organ of the United Nations (UN). It was established in June 1945 by the Charter of the United Nations and began work in April 1946. The seat of the Court is at the Peace Palace in The Hague (Netherlands).

The Court has a twofold role: to settle, in accordance with international law, legal disputes submitted to it by States (contentious cases) and to give advisory opinions (advisory procedures) on legal questions referred to it by duly authorized United Nations organs and specialized agencies.

WEBThe Court has had its seat in the Peace Palace in The Hague (Netherlands) since 1946. From 1922, its predecessor, the Permanent Court of International Justice, occupied the same premises, made available to it by the Carnegie Foundation, which owns and administers the Peace Palace.

WEBVisits. The Court is open to members of the public whenever its activities allow. The hope is that this will increase public awareness of its work and how it operates. It is therefore possible for both groups and individuals to attend hearings.
