If your trip is to LA, I would plan on going to the LA Zoo, since it is closer and a wonderful zoo. San Diego Zoo is great but about a 3 hour drive, more or less, depending on traffic.
How much time should I plan to spend at the zoo? I understand it depends on people's pace, but just average not leisurely walking or walking right past everything but just enough time to see most if not all the animals?

When you say Hollywood do you mean the sign or along the walk of fame? If you mean the sign then it’s either a long walk or Uber. If you want the walk of fame you can get The 96 bus to perishing square station then change to the metro red line and get off at Hollywood/highland station - takes a little over an hour. However either of these by Uber would probably only take 15 minutes max depending on traffic and probably only cost $10 so depending how many of you there are it may work out cheaper.
