Measles was considered eradicated in the United States in 2000. For the first time in 25 years, cases have reached a new high.
In 2025, the US reported 1,288 measles cases, the highest number in 33 years, primarily in Texas and neighboring states. Most infections occurred among unvaccinated individuals and vaccine-hesitant communities.
There are 1,288 confirmed measles cases across the U.S., the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said, warning that numbers are the highest they've been since 1992. Dr. Celine Gounder joins "CBS News 24/7" with more details.
There have been more measles cases in the US this year than any other since the the disease was declared eliminated a quarter-century ago.
More people have contracted measles in the US so far this year than in any year in the last three decades. New data from Atlanta-based Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows 1,288 infections this year through 38 states, including Georgia. By comparison, the US recorded 285 measles infections during all of 2024.
Michigan has reported 17 confirmed cases in 2025, including recent infections in Kent, Muskegon and Grand Traverse counties.
