Apple’s investment in the mining company MP Materials will also help the tech giant reduce its dependence on China for rare earth metals.

Apple has announced a $500m deal for rare earths. The deal is with MP Materials, a US company that operates the only US rare earths mine and is being seen as helping to mitigate supply chain risks for rare earth magnets that are essential for manufacturing electronics.

MP Materials will supply Apple with magnets it produces at a Texas facility, expanding Apple’s U.S. supply chain at a time when President Trump has pressured Apple to do so.
