The FBI has provided the Justice Department with names of employees who worked on January 6-related cases after a new demand from the acting deputy attorney general, capping a weeklong back-and-forth between bureau leadership – who had sought to protect agent and staff identities – and the department.

Acting U.S. Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove made the statements on Wednesday in a memo to staff seen by Reuters.

The message from the acting deputy attorney general, which also accuses acting FBI Director Brian Driscoll of “insubordination,” is aimed at providing a measure of clarity following days of turmoil and uncertainty inside the bureau.

Thousands of FBI employees who participated in investigations related to Jan. 6 have been asked to complete in-depth questionnaires about their involvement in the inquiries.

The Justice Department accused acting FBI leaders of “insubordination” after they resisted demands for agent information tied to the Jan. 6 Capitol riot probes. A memo from acting Deputy Attorney General Emil Bove reassured agents who “followed orders” and “acted ethically” that they would not face penalties.
