Wess Roley was living out of his vehicle and his former roommate said he shaved off his long hair and started to “kind of go downhill.”

As a wildfire began to sow panic in a small northern Idaho mountain community, a group of firefighters who rushed to put out the blaze instead found themselves in an unexpected shootout.

The suspect was found dead with a firearm nearby late Sunday, authorities said.
