Since the holiday was officially designated in 1983, only one president was sworn in on Martin Luther King Jr. Day: former President Bill Clinton. For his second term, Clinton's Inauguration took place on Jan. 20, 1997.

Following the values of Martin Luther King, Jr., the event will celebrate community service, unity and peaceful protest.

Activists and organizations are holding rallies leading up to MLK Day and convening meetings with state lawmakers to strategize on how to safeguard policies and avoid funding cuts to social service programs that largely support Black and Latino communities.
