Pete Rose, baseball's all-time hits leader who was shunned by the Hall of Fame over a gambling scandal during his coaching career, died September 30 at 83.

When Pete was banned from MLB for life for gambling on the game in 1989, the Hall acted shortly thereafter and effectively made him ineligible for induction. For more than a decade Rose denied he ever bet on baseball during his managing career with the Reds, despite the evidence that said he did repeatedly.

Major League Baseball legend Pete Rose has died, ABC News reported. He was 83. While there aren’t a lot of details yet about the manner in which he died, Rose was found by a family member, law enforcement told ABC News. The medical examiner told ABC News that Rose was not under the care of a doctor when he died, and the scene is being examined.
