A lot goes into the production of eggs — and with the Trump administration’s tariff policies potentially affecting costs for chicken feed and equipment, bird flu isn’t the only reason U.S. consumers may continue to pay high prices for eggs at the grocery store.

The Justice Department said Sunday it is investigating the skyrocketing cost of eggs, which producers have blamed on the latest outbreak of avian flu.

The two biggest factors driving egg prices to record levels, but farmers are not getting rich. Expenses remain historically high, and farmers are continuing to fight through the risk of losing their flock to this devastating disease.
