The United Nations’ food agency says it has paused aid distribution in Sudan’s famine-hit Zamzam displacement camp of a half-million people as fighting intensifies between the country’s warring sides.

Intense fighting in Sudan’s North Darfur region has forced the World Food Programme (WFP) to suspend life-saving food and nutrition assistance in the Zamzam camp, where famine has been declared, the agency said on Tuesday.

The current escalation of attacks and fighting in and around Zamzam camp for displaced people near El Fasher in North Darfur is making it impossible for Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) to continue providing medical assistance in such dangerous conditions.

Medical charity MSF said on Monday that it has been forced to suspend its activities in the famine-stricken Zamzam displacement camp in Sudan's North Darfur due to escalating attacks and fighting in and around it.

Doctors Without Borders has suspended all its work at the Zamzam camp in Sudan, where around 500,000 people live seeking safety from the nation's civil war.
