The 1984 Ferrari 288 GTO did more than revive a legendary badge. It quietly reset the rules for how fast, how focused, and how technologically ambitious a road‑legal supercar could be, and in doing so it lit the fuse on a new performance arms race.
So whenever one does come up for sale, it’s a big deal. Yesterday at Mecum’s Kissimmee auction in Florida, a 250 GTO sold for $38.5 million. The car was built for British racing team owner John Coombs, for whom the Ferrari factory painted it Bianco white, the sole 250 GTO to leave Maranello in that color.
