Ramirez was injured in a game against the Blue Jays on May 2 at Rogers Centre. In the third inning, he beat out an infield single to pitcher Chris Bassitt. As Ramirez closed in on first base, he was hit in the back by Bassitt’s throw, landed awkwardly on the bag and went tumbling over it.
Despite being banged up, Ramírez has played in 87 of Cleveland's 90 games with a slash line of .299/.364/.503 and 16 home runs.By using the All-Star week to recover, Ramírez will have a six-day break to get healthy before the Guardians resume play in the second half of the season.
The team says Ramírez will instead 'focus on recovery and preparation for the second half of the season.' The 32-year-old has dealt with several nagging injuries.
