TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — The Florida Highway Patrol has closed the Howard Frankland Bridge ahead of Hurricane Helene. FHP said the closure comes as a result of high winds and storm surges. “Motorists should seek alternate travel routes and if not absolutely necessary remain off the highways,” FHP wrote in a statement.
Gandy, Howard Frankland, Courtney Campbell bridges reopen after Helene
All lanes of the Gandy Bridge reopened Friday after Hurricane Helene lashed the region. Around 3 p.m., the inside eastbound lane reopened, reviving two routes from St. Petersburg to Tampa. The Sunshine Skyway Bridge fully reopened around 1 p.m. Friday. The Courtney Campbell Causeway reopened at 11 p.m. Friday.

The Florida Highway Patrol and Florida Department of Transportation will close the Sunshine Skyway bridge when wind speeds reach about 45 mph. The Gandy Bridge, Howard Frankland Bridge and/or Courtney Campbell Causeway will be closed if wave action makes travel unsafe.
