Almost 2,200 people living in West Los Angeles were without power for part of Saturday after power lines in their area were hit by metallic balloons, according to the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power.

Metallic balloons drifted into power lines, leaving hundreds without power in the West LA communities of Sawtelle and Westwood.

More than 1.3 million people were plunged into darkness early Tuesday. Failure of an underground power line is believed to be the cause and repairs could take up to two days.

According to Silver, Avista crews identified the problem at around 9:30 a.m. and estimated that the problem will be solved by 12 p.m.

Power was knocked out for thousands of LADWP customers in West LA on Saturday. Two major outages in Westwood and Sawtelle were related to metallic balloons, LADWP said. As of 2 p.m., power is expected to be restored around 5 p.
