Speaker of the House Mike Johnson says releasing the ethics committee report on the Florida lawmaker would set "a terrible precedent".

The House speaker will “strongly” urge his GOP ethics chair to shutter investigation without letting the Senate see files.

Gaetz resigned Wednesday, effectively ending a House Ethics Committee investigation into the allegations that the former representative engaged in sexual misconduct and illegal drug use and accepted improper gifts.

Other senators have said they expect the House Ethics Committee’s findings into Gaetz to be released despite his resignation from Congress—Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, told NBC News she is “confident” the information “will eventually be brought out,” and Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C., said “it’s probably going to come to light one way or the other.”

The committee has been investigating allegations that Mr. Gaetz, President-elect Donald J. Trump’s pick for attorney general, engaged in sexual misconduct and illicit drug use.
