The Trump administration has brought a small group of white South Africans to the United States as refugees in what it says is the start of a larger relocation effort.

The first group of refugees brought into the U.S. since Donald Trump became President followed an unusual path. On his first day back in office, he suspended all refugee admissions to the U.S.—upending resettlement plans for thousands fearing persecution and violence.

The first set of 49 white South Africans to be granted refugee status by President Donald Trump's administration are on their way to the US. On Sunday they boarded a flight from Johannesburg which is due to land in Washington DC later on Monday.
