Cesar Chavez was a steadfast believer in non-violent activism. When it seemed members of his movement were turning to violence to fight back, He launched a hunger strike that would last for 25 days.
These included the Delano Grape Strike and Boycott of 1965-70, which united Filipino and Mexican farmworkers; the 340-mile march from Delano to Sacramento in 1966; and a 25-day hunger strike in 1968.
Marches and rallies across the state highlighted the role of immigrant workers “as the backbone of American society,” organizers said.
