Shares in Nvidia and other tech companies slumped after the computer chipmaker said that tighter U.S. government controls on its exports of semiconductors used for artificial intelligence will cost it an extra $5.

The U.S. government ”indicated that the license requirement addresses the risk that the covered products may be used in, or diverted to, a supercomputer in China,” Nvidia said.

Nvidia warned that it expects a $5.5 billion hit to its revenue after the Trump administration blocked sales of its China-specific AI chips, a move that could reshape the global chip race and deepen the technology rift between the US and China.
