New York City police apologized for mistakenly accusing a teenager of a fatal shooting at a Brooklyn parade, then failing to retract the false allegation for nearly five months, despite knowing it was incorrect.

Police said Svacha allegedly shot and killed Jajuan Marls, 24, at the Extended Stay America motel on Van Dyke Avenue near 14 Mile Road in Sterling Heights. After the shooting, Svacha allegedly fled from the motel to his Center Line home, investigators reported.

In its updated statement, the police department said the 15-year-old teen was a “person of interest” in the shooting, which remains unsolved,
