A sudden burst of heavy rain has claimed dozens of lives in India-administered Kashmir and sparked frantic rescue efforts, the second recent disaster to underscore the vulnerability of those living in the Himalayas to the effects of extreme weather.

At least 60 people have died, and over 100 are missing following heavy rain that caused floods and landslides in Indian Kashmir, authorities said. Flash floods and mudslides triggered by torrential rain in the remote Chositi village mark the second disaster of its kind in the Himalayas in just over a week.

The disaster comes a week after deadly floods in a neighbouring state, underscoring the rising toll of extreme weather events in the Himalayan region.
