Freddie Owens was executed in South Carolina days after a key prosecution witness said he had lied on the stand decades earlier.

The state Supreme Court set the order in which the men would be executed with the earliest for a Spartanburg man in October and into March for others

Freddie Owens was put to death by lethal injection at Broad River Correctional Institution in South Carolina shortly before 7 p.m. on Friday.

Freddie Owens was executed Friday evening by lethal injection, after his attorneys’ last-chance appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court failed to stop it. Owens was pronounced dead at 6:55 p.m., making him the first inmate executed in South Carolina in nearly 14 years.
