Smoke from hundreds of wildfires in Canada has choked the skies over dozens of northern U.S. states in the Great Lakes and Northeast regions.

Wildfire smoke drifting over the Washington, D.C., area is making the skies look hazy and negatively affecting air quality. The air quality index is code yellow, or moderate, in D.C. and surrounding areas in Virginia and Maryland on Thursday,

From California to Canada, wildfires are ablaze, sending smoke and haze to other parts of the country.

About 1,800 firefighters were fighting the blaze, which broke out Tuesday afternoon in the village of Ribaute in the Aude region, a rural, wooded area that is also home to wineries.
