The union win, at a Philadelphia store where workers are seeking higher wages, comes as Amazon is also fighting organizing efforts among some warehouse employees and delivery drivers.

A majority of workers at a Whole Foods Market in Philadelphia voted in favor of joining the United Food and Commercial Workers International union, presenting a new foothold for organized labor within parent-company Amazon.

Whole Foods CEO Jason Buechel has taken on an expanded role at Amazon and will now lead the Worldwide Grocery Stores (WWGS) division.

Buechel, a former management consultant, joined Whole Foods in 2013, and led efforts to unify the formerly decentralized chain’s technology and record-keeping systems.

Amazon.com Inc.’s Whole Foods Market chief has been tapped to run the retail giant’s entire grocery business. Jason Buechel will become the vice president of worldwide grocery stores, Amazon retail chief Doug Herrington said in a note to employees,

Jason Buechel will expand his role to oversee Amazon’s Worldwide Grocery Stores business, including Amazon Go convenience stores and Amazon Fresh physical and online stores, while also continuing to serve as Whole Foods Market CEO.
