An earthquake registering magnitude 4.2 shook part of central California AROMAS, Calif. — An earthquake registering magnitude 4.2 shook part of central California early Sunday, the United States Geological Survey reported.

Some Californians asleep at around 2:45 a.m. Sunday were rattled awake by a magnitude 4.2 earthquake centered near the Central Coast. The epicenter was about 2 miles northwest of Aromas, an unincoporated community straddling Monterey and San Benito counties that's about 90 miles south of San Francisco.
