The Nose Radome Electrical Test System - which has been operating at Hill AFB using 25-year old technology - is receiving a well-deserved upgrade. The system tests disturbances and variations in the sending and receiving of microwave radar signals through the nose of the F-16 Fighting Falcon.

F-16 History. F-16 operations started in 349 squadron on January 16th, 1979 when the first F-16B (#FB-01) was delivered to the Belgian Air Force making it the first F-16 squadron for the Belgians. Initial training on the type was conducted within 349 squadron. A dedicated training squadron was only established a few years later.

Introduction. The Belgian Air Force was one of the first four international customers for the F-16 Fighting Falcon. Belgium ordered a total of 160 F-16s in two batches. Heavy attrition and restructuring of the armed forces reduced the operational inventory to 54 aircraft. The remaining aircraft have been stored or sold (14 to Jordan for example).

J-139. RNlAF 323 sqn. F-16A Block 15X. Collided in a mid-air with a Sea Harrier FA.2 (ZD580/'710') from the Royal Navy off the Dorset coast over the English Channel near Portland. Both aircraft recovered safely at Yeovilton. Damage caused to the F-16 was loss of a part of the port stabiliser, and the Harrier lost its radome. The F-16 was repaired.

Apr 24, 1997 · Collided with F-16A (78-0287, 287) over Sula, Norway killing one of the pilots, Rune Hernes. He was unable to eject and followed the aircraft until it impacted the ocean. The reason was he lost his entire vertical tail in the collision. When he tried to eject he was in a fast rotating flat spin.

Feb 12, 2018 · Both aircraft recovered safely at Yeovilton. Damage caused to the F-16 was loss of a part of the port stabiliser, and the Harrier lost its radome. The F-16 was repaired. Both aircraft went to the FSAU at Yeovilton for investigation where the F-16 stayed for a couple weeks.
