Currently, the Port of Philadelphia’s facilities are serviced by two class-one railroads: CSX and Norfolk Southern. CSX provides daily service between Philadelphia and major Midwestern, Southern and Southeastern U.S. destinations. Norfolk Southern provides double-stack intermodal service between Philadelphia and major Midwest destinations.

Oct 27, 2019 · One of the premier railroad attractions of Philadelphia is the former PRR High Line that takes freight thru the (almost) downtown area of the city, on a structure that is about 50-60 feet high, and stretches for 1.5 miles on an elevated structure of one form or another.

Jan 17, 2020 · An H8 2-8-0 Consolidation moves a freight along the West Philadelphia Elevated, a.k.a. the “High Line,” in the 1910s or early ’20s. PRR built the High Line for through freights to bypass the tangle of tracks on the west bank of the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia.

Mar 14, 2020 · Freight trains still operate today under the Norfolk Southern Railroad system. Starting locally in 1839 as the Philadelphia & Reading, the company became the Reading Railroad in 1924, then Conrail in 1976 and finally Norfolk Southern in 1999.

Through the 1840s, most railroad companies operated a single route–either a passenger line like the Philadelphia, Germantown & Norristown Railroad (PGN) or a freight line such as the Philadelphia & Reading Railroad (the Reading), chartered in 1833.
