Wantage is an attractive market town in the picturesque Vale of White Horse. It is most famous as the birthplace of Alfred the Great. A statue of King Alfred, looking suitably regal, stands in the busy market place.

Wantage was a small Roman town on the road from Frilford to the Ermin (e) Way junction above Speen. It later had an important Royal palace in Saxon times. King Alfred the Great was born there in AD 847. In medieval times, the manor of Wantage was rented to Sir Fulk FitzWarin.

In the early 13th century, King John's adversary, Fulk FitzWarin of Whittington (Salop), seems to have got hold of the Manor of Wantage from the Earl of Pembroke. The house stood somewhere in the region of Court Close (also the traditional site of the old Saxon Palace).
