This article describes the history of the Baltimore and its surrounding area in central Maryland since the establishment of settlements by European colonists in 1661. The Baltimore area had been inhabited by Native Americans since at least the 10th millennium BC, when Paleo-Indians first settled in the region.

In 1752 John Moale sketched a rough drawing of Baltimore Town as seen from Federal Hill. In 1817 Edward Johnson Coale repainted this view, adding picturesque embellishments. Four centuries of decisions made by millions of people have created Balti-more City.
