Dec 12, 2023 · So although the tsunami wave was estimated to be 30 feet which would have allowed the sea wall to be relatively effective, it had dropped in height which allowed the tidal wave to overtake it. The back half of the wave moves much faster so it just continued to push and push more water.

Why does the water retract from the shoreline before a tsunami?
An earthquake pushes the water away from the land. The tsunami is when the water returns. An earthquake is caused by the movement of the earth. If the earthquake is caused by an uplift near the shore then it can push the water. If the land drops in the ocean it can pull the water down. Sooner or later the water will reach a point of equilibrium.

Well it was the same here. I am sure no one even thought the word Tsunami, it was this tsunami that made tsunamis famous in the world. Before there hadn't really been any documented giant tidal wave that killed people at least not in modern era. We also tried to get out through the help of Sweden but it was Denmark that came to the rescue.

A whole village on the island was swept away by the tsunami too and later rebuilt by the Swiss government. It is a complete ghost town now because everyone on the island thinks its haunted, even though you can pick a house and move in for free. I was also given a book written by an Australian journalist about the day the tsunami hit the island.
